About
Hello. I am called “Phoebe Gloeckner.”
This is my blog. Please see most recent archives (menu on the left) for new entries.
Ummm. Let me see. I am the author of two books, The Diary of a Teenage Girl; An Account in Words and Pictures, and A Child’s Life and Other Stories, both published by Frog Ltd., an imprint of North Atlantic Books in Berkeley, CA. Those books are usually called “graphic novels,” although I guess I just think of them as stories-especially the Diary book, which doesn’t seem to fit into any literary category in particular.
I am employed as an Assistant Professor in the University of Michigan School of Art and Design.
Currently, I am working on a novel which was has been many years in the making. It was inspired by, among other things, a piece I did for a book called “I Live Here” which will be soon published by Pantheon Books. That piece focused on the murders of women in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. My research and many return visits to Juarez led me to my current work, which is about a particular murdered girl and those closest to her, tying her life to the broader world, and other things…
I am very fortunate to have received a Fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation which allowed me time (without teaching duties) to work on this novel last year (2009).
Also, writer/actress Marielle Heller is producing a theatrical play based on The Diary of a Teenage Girl. It will open in NYC at Three Legged Dog (3LD) Theatre, March 2010.
If you try to reach me by e-mail, please be warned that I’m often painfully slow to respond. Not willfully so -I just loose track of time despite my efforts to prioritize and organize. If you don’t hear back from me in whatever amount of time seems reasonable to you, feel free to write again and again if needed to tell me to hurry the $%#@ up.”
OK?
Also, I may be contacted indirectly through my wonderful agent, Ms. Amy Williams of McCormick & Williams.
Truly Yours,
Phoebe Gloeckner
